Ways To Make The Most Out Of World Environment Day

June 3, 2013

The environment needs our help, and World Environment Day is an important day to recognize what we can do to protect the world we live in. Since 1972, World Environment Day has been a popular celebration throughout the whole world. People of all ages are encouraged to get involved to make our world a cleaner and greener place to live. It’s an excellent time to get the whole family involved and to teach children the importance of living green.

Whether you choose to tackle city-wide cleaning on June 5, or you practice more sustainable ways of living for you and your family, World Environment Day is the perfect day for you to kick start your new green routine.

It’s Time To Go Green

Wheels For Wishes is a strong supporter of the green movement. Through our vehicle donation program that benefits Make-A-Wish, donated vehicles are either auctioned off to new owners or are recycled and reused to build new cars.

Wheels For Wishes is all about protecting the environment and enforcing recycling and waste reduction, so we hope you enjoy our tips for ways you can start a green routine on this year’s World Environment Day!

  • Donate A Car: As we mentioned previously, Wheels For Wishes is a vehicle donation program benefiting Make-A-Wish. Vehicle donation is not only an incredibly kind and generous act, but it is also green and eco-friendly. Donated vehicles are auctioned off for new owners to use, or they are recycled and each and every part of the car is reused to build new cars. This also helps create new jobs while also reducing waste. Plus, earned proceeds from donated vehicles benefit Make-A-Wish and go toward granting a wish for a local child in your community.

  • Organize A Clean-Up: It’s quite possible that your city may already have World Environment Day activities planned, but if not, don’t let that stop you from getting involved on your own time. You can simply organize a clean-up event in your city, whether you just get you and your family involved, or you get a large group of people to help out! If you get a large group of volunteers, try to split up groups so you can tackle several different areas.

  • Ditch Plastic Bags: If you are still using plastic bags for your shopping, now is the time to switch them out with reusable bags.

  • Try Meatless Mondays: If you haven’t jumped on the Meatless Monday bandwagon yet, now is the time. Meatless Mondays will not only improve your own personal health, but also the health of the planet.

  • Recycle: Maybe you will choose to recycle your car, but if not, start recycling at home. It makes a huge difference in protecting the environment!

  • Clean Up The Beach: If you live near the beach, help keep it clean! Even if it’s not a big group of people helping you out, walk around and clean up heavily-polluted areas as much as possible.

  • Reduce Waste: For every item you throw away, first think of another way it can be reused. Pretty soon, you will have much less waste and will be reusing things you never thought possible! For example, clean glass spaghetti jars can be used as vases or for storing grains or candy.

  • Use Less Water: It’s something you’ve been hearing for years, but cutting your water usage in half can make a huge difference!

  • Use As Little Resources As Possible: One of the biggest concerns is that the world’s population is so large, and so is the number of resources used to create everything. When you choose to use things that take little to no resources to produce, you are helping to reduce waste. For example, when you eat a food item that took a large amount of resources to create it, you are creating a huge amount of waste when it is left to be thrown out. Eat more fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, grains, and seeds! Sustainable consumption focuses on doing more and better with less, and this is something you can practice in your very own home.

  • Only Cook What You Need: Instead of thinking in the terms of what you plan on eating for leftovers, try to only cook what you will eat immediately. There are plenty of times when you plan to eat something for leftovers, but it doesn’t sound good after all. This creates waste, so practice only cooking what you and your family will eat right away. Around one third of the world’s food for human consumption is wasted each year, which equals around 1.3 billion tons!
